Hunting in South Africa

Sable #2Sable #2There are various forms of hunting in South Africa. Willem conducts rifle, bow and wing shooting safaris.

Rifle hunting is by far the most popular type of hunting in South Africa while bow hunting is growing in popularity.

Your professional hunter is highly qualified, experienced and technically competent to advise the client on the hunting of various species with the most suitable method and weapon.

Bow Hunting

Compound, long bows and re-curve bows are the most popular in South Africa.

It is also recommended to use a 60 pound plus draw weight bow.

Bow hunting is usually conducted in three ways depending on your specific situation and species hunted:

Blinds: The majority of bow hunts are made from permanently constructed blinds. These are situated approximately 20 yards from waterholes and salt licks. Some blinds are elevated from the ground, and others are ground blinds, depending on the terrain, sun and wind direction. Animals bagged regularly through this method are Kudu, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Warthog and Njala.

Stalking: This method is used for the more difficult species or those that does not frequently visit waterholes. Thick vegetation makes it possible to get within bow range during certain months of the year.

Opportunity: This includes a variety of hunting methods. The most commonly used is locating animals while driving in a 4x4 vehicle. A large area can be covered using this method without losing valuable time walking through dead terrain. Once game has been sighted, the stalk is planned and the vehicle drives off leaving the hunter and PH in a suitable position. Often the opportunity arises whereby the hunter is dropped behind cover or downwind and the game are moved towards him by the trackers. This can be very exciting and rewarding but needs a lot of patience and time. Any species available in an area can be hunted in this way. An active game trail used by animals can also be used for putting up a tree stand or blind.

Dangerous game hunting by bow requires special permits from Nature Conservation authorities. We will assist the bow hunter in getting the latest permits and documentation to hunt your preferred species.

Wing Shooting

We will ensure that your wing shooting safari will be a once in a lifetime experience. The following birds are available:

  • Cape Turtle Doves
  • Laughing Doves
  • Rock Pigeons ? You must be a good shooter and will need a lot of ammo to hunt these flying rockets of the sky!
  • Crested and Helmeted Guinea fowl
  • Francolin and Partridges ? The ultimate is the Grey-Wing partridge
  • Quail
  • Spur Wing and Egyptian Geese
  • Cape, Hottentot, Red Billed and Yellow Billed Teal
  • Cape Shoveller
  • White Faced Ducks
  • Various other smaller birds

You can have a good shooting holiday, with an array of very different birds in a friendly country. Shotgun cartridges are readily available for 12, 16, 20 and 410 gauge.

Rifle Hunting

Black WildebeestBlack WildebeestWillem's specialty is the hunting of various animals (dangerous and plains game) in South Africa. Our clients have taken world class trophies at some of the most spectacular hunting destinations available. The following information can be well known to some hunters but can be very interesting to first time hunters to Southern Africa. There are a few basic styles of rifle hunting in South Africa.

The first is the walking and stalking method. This method involves that the hunter and Professional Hunter (PH) leave camp on foot or by vehicle. The most commonly used is locating animals while driving in a 4x4 vehicle. A large area can be covered using this method without losing valuable time walking through dead terrain. Once game has been sighted, the stalk is planned and the vehicle drives off leaving the hunter and PH in a suitable position.

Another variation of the above method is walking and glassing (using binoculars) especially in mountainous areas. This method is very exciting and can be considered as real hunting. You can also get a good viewpoint from where you can look with your binoculars to see if you can spot any game.

The second method as used by bow hunters (in South Africa) is sitting in a hide and waiting at a waterhole for the animals. This method is not very popular with rifle hunters and is considered not very sportsmanlike. More or less the same method is putting out bait and using a hide (leopard, lion and bush pig). You can also sit and wait close to a well-used game track. This method is more acceptable for Bushbuck, Suni, Red and Blue Duiker.

Another method is a driven hunt, where the hunters will be hidden and the animals will be driven in their direction. This method is used for Springbok shooting in the Karoo and is efficient in big, open and flat terrain.

A very sporting and exciting method is to look for tracks at a waterhole or as you move through an area and then follow the tracks till you are close enough to determine if it is a good animal or not.

The last method is by using a vehicle (driving around) till you spot some animals and then shooting from a still standing vehicle. This method is totally unacceptable to some people but is sometimes the last resort when you are running out of time, disabled or all other methods failed. This type of shooting from a vehicle can also be used when you suddenly encounter an animal while driving around. The choice to shoot remains with the hunter.

Miscellaneous Information

Eland #4Eland #4Hunting Areas
Willem Botha only conducts hunting on privately owned game farms varying in size from 1000 to 100 000 acres, fenced or unfenced, or on Government owned Nature Reserves (20 000 to 100 000 acres). Please note that this is not the notorious paddock hunting used by some PH's. We do not believe in the put and take method as used by a lot of PH's in South Africa. The animals we will be hunting were born and grew old on these areas and were not caught in another area and released a day or week before the actual hunt. We believe in fair chase hunting methods, except for the Lion hunting as explained.

Personal Attention
Willem will personally conduct the hunt and the client can be assured of the best service and hunting experience available. If larger groups need to be accommodated, additional experienced Professional Hunters will be used to ensure a personal experience for each client.

It is advisable that every hunter should have his/her own PH (one-on-one basis). Willem employs the best professional hunters available in South Africa. His professional hunters will be at your service during the complete duration of your safari. You will be ensured of the professional hunters full attention and effort of getting you the best animals. This one-on-one basis is slightly more expensive but is strongly recommended. A PH can only have two clients at a time according to the South African Professional Hunters Association's laws.

Hunt Duration
We recommend that a hunt should be between March and October and typically for about 10 days at a time, depending on the number of animals required. The client will fly to Johannesburg and we recommend that you will then fly to Bloemfontein, where we will collect you and also see that you board the plane afterwards. This arrangement will save some traveling time. Final traveling details will be arranged.

Quality of Trophies
All the animals on offer will be guaranteed SCI qualifiers and some can even be Rowland Ward. This means that Willem's staff and he will try their utmost best in letting you shoot a qualifying animal and not the first animal they come across. This is a pledge from Willem and his staff. We want to be as proud as you are with the standard of your animals. If you are a trophy hunter wanting the highest quality trophies, we will definitely help you achieve this dream. Willem's track record proves your high standard of trophies.

Red Hartebeest #3Red Hartebeest #3If the client is a serious record book trophy hunter and is only looking for world class record book trophies, this should be specified when booking a hunt. These animals are not readily available at all hunting areas and greater effort is required to obtain such standard. Prices of these record-breaking trophies, as ordered by the client, will be negotiated. The animals listed in the advertised trophy price list and package price list are all guaranteed SCI and even Roland Ward standard animals and their prices is as advertised.

Daily Fees
The daily fees (as listed in the prices section) includes all meals, drinks, accommodation, laundry, all transport (between hunting areas and between airport and hunting areas), normal hunting licenses and VAT, skinning of trophies, preparing of trophies and taking the trophies to the taxidermist. Note that there will be no additional costs regarding the hunt or the hunters stay with Willems' operation. Depending on the size (number of hunters and number of animals taken) and duration of the safari, the daily fees are negotiable.

Hunting Packages
It is suggested that a first time hunter coming to South Africa must seriously consider hunting a plains game package consisting of five to ten animals and the duration should be approximately ten days.

Specials on packages is such that traveling is minimized and the cost of a package is usually less than the individual trophy prices.

Importation of fire arms

Requirements from 1 July 2004

Temporary Importation of Firearms into South Africa
Latest Information Received from the South African Police Service

Importation of Firearms (Updated - August 2004)
Visitors bringing firearms into South Africa for hunting purposes, will be asked to fill in a SAP 520 - Temporary Import Application which is available from your outfitter, or which can be downloaded off the SAPS Website at www.saps.gov.za, or which can be filled out on arrival. We would suggest filling in the form beforehand to save the processing time at the Police Office.

Instructions for Filling in SAP 520 Form

  • Black ink must be used to fill in the form.
  • The form must be left unsigned until the document is finalized in front of the police official issuing the actual permit.
  • Please note that not all sections of the form apply. Visitors bringing their own firearms in for hunting purposes should concentrate on filling in the following: Section D - (temporary import or export permit)
    Section E - 1 - 25.4
    Section G
Section I - (Must fill in all details requested)
Section J - (remember do not sign until in front of police officer at firearm office)

Additional Requirements along with the SAP 520 are the following:

  1. Identity and Flight Details
    • Passport
    • Return Airline Ticket
  2. Other Supporting Documentation
    • Proof of Ownership
    • Firearm licenses, documentary proof, etc. For USA Citizens, Customs Declaration Form 4457 (officially stamped) is acceptable
    • Proof of Export
    • Documentary proof of export from the country of origin
    • Motivation Letter from Client
    • This is a letter from the client stating that he is temporarily importing the referred to firearm/s for the purpose of hunting, to include that the firearm/s are required as he will be hunting (list the species to be hunted), etc.
    • Invitation Letter from the Hunting Outfitter
    • This is supporting documentation from the Hunting Outfitter/company with whom the client will be hunting, to include full name of company, full contact details and address, dates and location where the client will be hunting and confirming that the applicant will be using the specific firearms as applied for.
    • Any Other Supporting Documents
    • Firearms will be physically inspected to ensure the serial number(s) match those of the licenses (proof of ownership) and the application form. Ammunition will also be inspected.

For visitors clearing customs at the Johannesburg International Airport, please take note of the following procedure to be followed on arrival:

  • Clear passport control in the Terminal where your flight arrives (generally SAA and its co-partners at Terminal 2 and all other airlines at Terminal 1).
  • Proceed to baggage claim at the respective carousel. Pick up general baggage, then proceed to the respective Airline Help Desk to pick up firearm/s from the airline company and sign a receipt for the firearm/s. Ask the Airline Help Desk to direct you to the South African Police Firearm Office. Depending on the terminal where you arrive, they may need to escort you to the Office.
  • Proceed to the South African Police Firearm Office (Do not at this point proceed to customs)
  • On receipt of the temporary import permit at the SAPS Firearm Office, proceed to Customs, the Red Zone, where you declare the firearm/s and finish other custom clearance procedures.

For those visitors clearing customs at any of the other international points of entry, please take note of the relevant information made above which relates to documentation requirements, etc.

Please insure sufficient time is allowed to go through the temporary importation process and to clear customs. During the busy periods of the hunting season up to seventy clients may be needing permits at the same time. We would therefore recommend at least five (5) hours be set aside for this procedure and between connecting flights.

Firearm / Ammunition Allowances and Specifications

  1. No more than one firearm per caliber and 200 rounds per firearm will be permitted. No ammunition for other rifle calibers will be permitted. An exception to this may apply for shotguns where more than one of the same caliber may be allowed for bird hunting purposes if the client produces on arrival at the SAPS Gun Office an acceptable written motivation as to why more than one is required.
  2. Firearms must bear the manufacturer's serial number or any other mark by which the firearm can be identified. The identification number must be stamped and the mark affixed in the prescribed manner on the barrel or the frame or the receiver of the firearm.
  3. Handguns will be allowed into the country, but only for hunting purposes. Any visitor wanting to bring in a handgun in this regard needs to have a letter from an association in the country of origin, stating the handgun will be used for hunting purposes.
  4. Prohibited firearms which may NOT be imported into South Africa include:
    1. Any fully automatic weapon
    2. Any semi-automatic weapon
    3. Handgun/s for self-defense
    4. Weapons which fall under military categories
  5. A semi-automatic shotgun for hunting purposes may be allowed if an application is made at least 21 days before arrival through the Central Firearms Register with a motivation letter as to why this type of firearm is required.

General Provisions:

  1. Temporary Import Permits:
    1. May only be issued to a foreign visitor for the purpose of hunting
    2. Will be issued subject to the requirements of the Act with regard to the carrying, storage, safe custody and transport of a firearm and ammunition
    3. Subject to the use of the firearm only for the purpose set out in the permit
    4. Subject to the fact that no person who holds a temporary import permit is allowed to transfer the firearm to another person in South Africa without prior written permission having been obtained from the Central Firearm Register.
    5. Whenever the holder of a temporary import permit leaves the Republic of South Africa, the firearm in respect of which the permit is issued must accompany the holder of the permit
    6. Possession of no more than the quantity of cartridges determined by the Registrar and specified on the permit for each firearm in respect of which the temporary import permit applies
    7. A Temporary Import Permit shall not be issued for a period exceeding six months at a time
    8. Applicant must be 21 or over
    9. Should a firearm not be declared on arrival and a temporary import permit not issued, you will face severe penalties and possible arrest on departure from South Africa.
  2. Applications for Temporary Import Permits can be made in advance to the Central Firearm Register. Ask your Hunting Outfitter to assist you in this regard.
  3. Please ensure that your firearm/s arrive on the same flight as you do. This must be done with the airline company on departure. Your firearm/s may only be signed for by you and will not be released to your outfitter or professional hunter should it/they arrive on a separate flight. If the firearm/s do not arrive with the passenger, the passenger must proceed to his final destination in South Africa and apply at the closest Police Station for a Temporary Import Permit. When the Temporary Import Permit has been issued, the original permit with the keys to the rifle case must be couriered to the Border Post of entry. A Transport Agent with transport permit must be appointed by the passenger. This Transport Agent must have a letter from the passenger instructing him/her to transport the firearm/s to the passenger in person. The firearm/s will be inspected by the Police at the Port of entry and the firearm/s and permit will be handed to the transporter to be transported to the passenger.
  4. Please do not pay for any service regarding the handling of firearms at Johannesburg International Airport, or any port of entry. The issuing of the SAP 520 is a free service and the South African Police Service asks clients not to pay anybody involved in handling firearms from the time of arrival in South Africa right through until you receive your firearm/s and the permit from the SAPS. Clients that are paying the various airline staff, security staff, or porters involved are actually creating a problem. Please note however there is a handling fee charged by airlines and/or security companies for the handling of handguns, and some airlines have started charging a handling fee for all firearms. We suggest checking with your airline with regard to any "official" fees that may be required.
  5. There is no permit required, nor any charge by the South African Police Service for a bow. Handling fees are charged by airline and/or security companies for bows and handguns.
  6. Please note that NO firearms will be held for safekeeping by the SAPS. If a client brings in a prohibited firearm, brings in more than what is allowed, or lacks the necessary documentation and his request for a temporary import permit is denied, the involved firearms must be exported immediately by the client or voluntarily surrendered to the State.

In Transit Passengers (Transiting South Africa)

It is critical that you check with and confirm with the airline/s involved before departure to make sure what their procedure is for the transfer of baggage and/or firearms.

If the airline does transfer your baggage/firearms, and you have booked them through to the final destination, and you stay in the in-transit area and do not clear South African customs, then you need not go through the temporary import process.

If your airline company will not transfer your baggage/guns to your connecting airline/flight, then you must collect your baggage/firearm/s and go through the entire entry process. If this is the case, the South African limitations, requirements, etc. will apply.

This also applies if you are overnighting in South Africa before flying on to your country of destination.

Taxidermy

Taxidermist fees, shipping and dipping costs are excluded and will depend on whether the client decides on mounting the trophies in South Africa or shipping them to your country of origin. Excellent taxidermists are available in South Africa and their prices are very competitive. Trophies can be shoulder mounted or only scull mounted (which is much cheaper). Once the client decides on mounting the trophies in South Africa, we can visit the taxidermist and deliver the trophies with the clients instructions and the client can get a quote from the taxidermist before leaving South Africa. Willem recommends that the taxidermist's delivery time is six months and that the taxidermist's prices are very competitive.

For the importation of trophies into the USA, Willem suggests the services of the following person: John Meehan of Fauna and Flora in New York - e-mail: jjmeehan@faunaandflora.com. He will make sure that all the paperwork is acceptable and complete and get your shipment through the inspections of Customs, Fish and Game, and USDA. They will keep it in their bonded facilities until cleared and ready to be shipped to you. His telephone number is 1-800-886-3286 or 1-718-977-7700 or fax 1-718-977-8230.
