All of our self-guided, remote moose hunts are fully outfitted and we even supply a two-way radio for safety and convenience.
We supply the tents, cooking & eating equipment, tarps, cook stove and cook stove fuel, water jug, salt for your hides/capes, pepper for your game meat, bear spray, sleeping pads, and more.
Topo maps of the actual moose hunting areas are available in most cases.
We drop our moose hunters into unit 19B.
We normally drop caribou hunters into units 17, 18 & 19B.
The moose season runs from September 5th to the 20th.
The caribou season for non-residents runs from September 1st to the 15th each year. We take resident hunters out until the end of September.
We suggest that you hunt the last part of the season when ever possible. During the last ten to twelve days of the moose season, normally the temperatures are cooler, there is less cover, and the bulls become more active during the day.
Self-Guided Alaskan Float Hunt-Adventure-2EOn a moose/big game hunt we would suggest that you plan a 10 to 12-day hunt, with atleast 8 to 10 full days or more of actual hunting.
On a two-camp caribou/moose/black bear/wolf/wolverine hunt, we would suggest that you plan to hunt caribou for 7 to 9-days, with 5 to 7 full days of actual caribou hunting. Then hunt moose and other big game for 10 to 12 days, with 8 to 10 full days of actual hunting.
On a moose drop hunt, it is best to have only two to three moose hunters three hunters in the same camp. If you have more than in your group, you should do a float moose hunt or a float/drop moose hunt, or split up into two groups of two and hunt out of two different areas. The odds of taking more than two to three trophy bulls out of the same drop hunting area is slim, no matter what someone else may tell you, unless you do a float moose hunt.
The Bull Moose taken by our past self-guided hunters, over the last 20 years, have had racks that averaged between 50" to 60". Some of our past self-guided moose hunters have taken racks exceeding 65" to 70".
Most self-guided moose hunters harvest the first legal Bull Moose they come across. If you want a huge trophy Bull Moose, they are normally in our hunting areas, but you must be willing to pass up the smaller bulls if you want a "Real Monster Bull Moose."
Many moose hunters do not allow themselves enough days in the field to be successful, or they do not hunt from sunrise to sunset.
Other hunters are not in good shape and/or are not able to, or willing to, walk a mile or two to get their trophies.
Many hunters give up before their scheduled hunt is over thus ending their chance for success at all and our over all success for that season.
In most cases, if the weather conditions are good, the hunters are tough and work for their trophies, and the hunters hunt for 8 to 10 days or more, many of them get their trophy Bull Moose.
The average past success on our self-guided moose hunts has been 50% to 70% and sometimes more. Again, the success mainly lies on the hunting party and the weather.
The average cost to fly from Anchorage to a small western Alaskan community where our packages begin and end runs about $375.00 to 400.00 per person round trip.
You will normally need to stay overnight in a western community for one night during your moose hunting trip. The cost will run about $75.00 for the night, per person and in most cases includes one supper and one breakfast.
You can get lucky and harvest a caribou, wolf, black bear or wolverine while on a self-guided moose hunt. However, most prime moose hunting areas will have little or no caribou in them.
Some of our float trips offer a good chance at getting caribou while on a moose hunt, but not every group is lucky enough to get both moose and caribou on the same trip.
If I wanted the best odds of getting a trophy Bull Moose and a trophy bull caribou, I would go on a two-camp hunt.
Three Happy Self-Guided Caribou HuntersHowever, if you want to hunt the last ten-days or so of the moose season, do not wait to long in making your reservation as we only take so many moose hunters each year.
When you book your moose hunting adventure with us we supply the following:
The cost to ship fish, game and/or antlers from a western Alaskan community back to Anchorage runs about 25 to 30 cents per pound.
The cost to ship a moose or caribou rack from Anchorage to your home town will run $50.00 to $150.00 depending on the commercial airline you fly with.
Excess baggage normally runs about $50.00 to $80.00 per box or bag from Anchorage to your hometown, if you meet the airline requirements.
Motels in Anchorage will range in cost from $75.00 to $125.00 per night, per person, based on double occupancy. If you have a party of three or four the cost can be less per person.
