Alaska Roosevelt Elk Hunting

Alaska offers some of the finest Roosevelt Elk Hunting in the world. This hunt takes place on Afognak Island, out of Seal Bay, which is just north of Kodiak, Alaska.

The terrain is composed of lowlands and areas up to 1,000 feet of elevation, forested and non-forested, and has many beaches. The forest canopy with its cushioned moss floor provides ideal hunting conditions.

Temperatures range from 30 to 50 degrees. You will stay in a modern hand hewn log cabin and enjoy home cooked meals in a beautiful log lodge.

A cabin cruiser and husky sea-skiffs are used to get to the hunting areas daily. Normal hunting success is about 70%.

The hunting season runs from September 25 to November 30th, however most elk hunts are done in October of each year. Some fishing is also available during most of the season.

The Roosevelt bull elk on Afognak Island are estimated to weigh up to 1300 pounds. The bulls are larger, slightly darker in color and have shorter, less symmetrical yet more massive antlers than the Rocky Mountain elk found east of the Cascade Mountains in Canada and the USA.

This outstanding Roosevelt elk hunting package includes:

  • 6 Days of hunting
  • Home cooked meals
  • Cabin cruiser & sea-skiffs
  • Professional guide 2x1
  • Care of trophy & meat
  • Queen & twin sized beds
  • Modern cabin accommodations
  • Freezers for game
  • Bush flight from Kodiak, AK

Six-Day Fully Guided Elk Hunt - $7,000 USD per hunter

Plus a $2,500 USD trophy fee for successful hunters

The rut takes place normally from the end of September to the middle of October. Multiple specie duck hunting is available beginning October 8th during your elk hunt.

The round trip bush flight from Kodiak to Seal Bay runs about $670 USD. The bush flight cost can be divided by others flying on the same days as you. You may be able to take the mail plane to/from Afognak from/to Kodiak on Mondays and Thursdays at a cost of about $85.00 each way. We will be happy to help you make your flight arrangements from Kodiak, AK to and from Seal Bay, AK.

A general hunting license runs $85. A Roosevelt elk tag will cost $300

License & tag fees for hunters from other countries are higher

Elk are now on a drawing permit system for the first part of the season

The full season runs from September 25 to November 30. The drawing period is from September 25th to October 22nd. The remainder of the season October 23rd to November 30th is an over-the-counter registration hunt for the remaining quota, which is usually enough that all hunters can get a permit for the last half of the season.

Note - you must get your deposits and applications in by May 15th for the early season hunt.
