Northern pike are found in all of the six lakes that we offer. In late May and June the pike will be found in shallow water near the back end of bays, river and creek inlets and outlets. Casting small and medium spoons, spinners and plugs is effective in early spring. As the water begins to warm, the fish will be found near the same areas but in somewhat deeper water and near emerging weed growth. During the summer months of July and August the pike will begin to relate to weed beds near deeper water. This is the time to get out the large spoons, plugs, spinners and jerk baits. Big lures mean big fish during this period. During September the weed beds begin to die off and the pike will move to points and bars. Large lures are still effective at this time. The best time to fish for pike is usually from 11:00 a.m. until around 5:00 p.m. and then again before dusk with surface lures.
Pike Tackle
The following tackle is recommended when fishing for northern pike;
Use smaller lures early in the season and switch to larger lures as the season progresses.
Fishing for Walleye
Walleye are found in all of six lakes. In late May and June the walleyes can be found in many of the same areas as the pike. Areas of moving water such as rapids, creek and river inlets and outlets, are good spots. As spring transitions into summer, walleyes may still be located near incoming rivers, but many will head into the main lake and relate to points, islands, bars and rock piles near deeper water. Casting and trolling minnow baits, spinners and jigs are the methods of choice for catching "Old Marble Eyes". As fall approaches the walleye will again school up and congregate near islands, points and river inlets. The best time of the day to catch walleyes is in the morning and the evening right up until dark. On cloudy, rainy days fishing can be good all day.

Arctic grayling are found in the river outlet of Kat Lake which forms the Katimiwi River. The river has rapids, riffles, deep pools and a strong current, providing ideal habitat for the grayling. The fish usually be be located in the pools of deeper water just above or below rapids. Casting small spoons, jigs, spinners and flies are your best bet to catch the "Sailfish of the North". |

Fishing for Lake Trout
Lake trout are found in Preston Lake and are caught in 7 to 20 feet of water during late May and June. During the months of July and August the fish move into deeper water ranging from 20 to 50 feet. The "lazy man's" way to catch lake trout is by trolling large spoons, spinners or diving plugs around rocky points and reefs adjacent to deep water. Casting the same lures or jigging in these locations is also effective and will provide you with a welcome break from the gas fumes you enjoy while trolling. The opportune times to fish for "Lakers" are on cloudy or rainy days or when there is a chop on the water. Early morning or evening fishing can also be productive when the weather conditions are just too nice during the middle of the day. Keep in mind that lake trout can be nomadic in their behavior and will migrate to find cooler water temperatures. |

When to Come Fishing
When planning a fishing trip to northern Canada prospective guests often ask the following question; "When is the best time for a fishing trip to Canada?" The answer to this question is "anytime". Fishing in the northern reaches of Manitoba is excellent throughout the season. You may find the following information helpful in determining when you would like to book your trip with us. |

| In late May and early June you will find the pike and walleye near the spawning areas. The lake trout at Preston Lake Outpost Camp will be found in shallow water right after ice out and will provide fast action on spoons and jig casted or trolled in 5 - 20 feet of water. | |

| After the pike and walleye have completed spawning they begin to actively feed and are susceptible to any lure that comes their way. Pike and walleye can be found in bays, river inlets and outlets near their spawning locations during the month of June. Lake trout will stay shallow through mid- June but will move deeper as the weather warms and the month progresses. | |
| July provides fantastic fishing for those anglers who are patient enough to wait until after June to come up north. Guests who fish our camps in the summer often rebook again for another summer trip. July weather is stable and the warmest of the season. Another plus to July is that there are |
| fewer bugs to deal with. Fishing is great in July although the tactics differ from those of spring fishing. As spring transitions into summer, the pike move to weed beds in deeper water. You will still catch smaller pike along the shallow shorelines and bays but the larger pike will be found in the weeds near deeper water (7 feet or more). The walleye move to the points and islands in July and are accessible with jigs and deeper running crankbaits. | |
This is a great month for big pike. The ratio of big pike per fisherman is the highest in the month of August. Take one look at the Manitoba Master Angler book and you will see that on average some of the biggest pike are caught each year in August. This is despite the fact |
| that angling pressure is much less than in June and July. The weather in early August is similar to July but becomes less stable as the month progresses. Pike will still be found in the weed beds but will begin to transition to rocky points as fall sets in. Walleye are usually scattered during August but will still be found near rocky points, shorelines and islands. As the month nears its end the walleye will school up again are found near rocky points and islands. | |
